Sources

Every text on this site is labeled by origin, so you can always tell the classical text apart from translation and modern commentary.

  • Classical text: the Chinese of the Zhouyi (周易), the core of the I Ching. It is in the public domain.
  • Translation: an English rendering of that text.
  • Notes: summaries, themes, keywords and commentary. These are modern interpretive aids written for this site and are not part of the classical text.

Why we don't use a well-known modern translation

Most popular English translations of the I Ching published in the 20th and 21st centuries are still under copyright. Rather than reproduce them, this site renders the classical text itself and keeps its own notes clearly separate. Corrections are welcome.
