Hexagram 3

Difficulty at the BeginningZhūn 屯

Also translated as Sprouting, Initial Difficulty, Gathering Support.

Water above Thunder below

Thunder stirs beneath water: new life pushing up through resistance, like a sprout breaking through hard ground. Zhun describes the confusion and struggle at the start of something important. The struggle is a sign of real growth, and it is best met by organizing, finding helpers and resisting the urge to rush ahead.

Judgment

屯:元亨利貞,勿用有攸往,利建侯。

Sprouting: supreme success; steadfastness is favorable. Do not set off anywhere. Favorable: establishing lords to help.

Clouds and thunder: sprouting. Taking this as a model, the noble one weaves order out of tangled threads.

Commentary

Zhun follows the pure forces of Heaven and Earth with the first meeting of the two: life begins, and beginnings are messy. The Chinese character shows a sprout struggling through the soil. The reading may suggest that your situation is at an early, untidy stage in which effort meets resistance and the shape of things is not yet clear.

The advice is twofold. First, do not force a direction yet; chaotic conditions punish hasty commitments. Second, bring order: sort out the threads, as the image says, and find the people who can help. In relation to a question, Zhun may emphasize that difficulty does not mean failure. It is often the sign that something real is being born.

The six lines

Lines are numbered from the bottom. In a reading, only the lines that are changing apply to your cast.

Line 1Nine at the beginning 初九

Line text

磐桓,利居貞,利建侯。

Wavering, going round in circles. Favorable to stay put and be steadfast; favorable to establish lords.

An obstacle at the very start causes hesitation. Do not force it; stay true to your aim and gather support. Humility toward those you need wins their help.

Themes
  • Hesitation at the threshold
  • Gathering allies
Watch for
  • Pushing through alone
Possibilities
  • Building the right support before moving

Line 2Six in the second place 六二

Line text

屯如邅如,乘馬班如。匪寇婚媾,女子貞不字,十年乃字。

Stuck, turning back; the horses of the team pull apart. Not raiders, but suitors. The girl stays steadfast and gives no pledge; after ten years, she pledges.

Help is offered, but accepting it now would mean losing independence or direction. It may be wise to wait, even a long time, for the right connection rather than the first one.

Themes
  • Waiting for the right offer
  • Independence
Watch for
  • Accepting help that compromises your aim
Possibilities
  • A better arrangement arriving in due time

Line 3Six in the third place 六三

Line text

即鹿无虞,惟入于林中,君子幾不如舍,往吝。

Going after deer with no gamekeeper, one only plunges into the forest. The noble one, seeing how things stand, would rather let it go. Pressing on: regret.

Pursuing a goal without guidance or knowledge of the terrain leads you astray. Recognize when to stop. Letting go of a badly prepared pursuit is wisdom, not defeat.

Themes
  • Knowing when to stop
  • Need for guidance
Watch for
  • Chasing something without the right knowledge
Possibilities
  • Turning back before losing your way

Line 4Six in the fourth place 六四

Line text

乘馬班如,求婚媾,往吉,无不利。

The horses of the team pull apart. Seek the marriage: going is fortunate, nothing is unfavorable.

Here the right connection is available. Take the initiative to seek it out, even if that means admitting you need help. The partnership will carry things forward.

Themes
  • Seeking partnership
  • Accepting help
Watch for
  • Pride that refuses help
Possibilities
  • A partnership that resolves the difficulty

Line 5Nine in the fifth place 九五

Line text

屯其膏,小貞吉,大貞凶。

Sprouting, its richness held back. In small things, steadfastness is fortunate; in large things, steadfastness is unfortunate.

Your good intentions are not yet understood or trusted, so your influence is limited. Work patiently in small steps; forcing a large plan now would backfire.

Themes
  • Limited influence
  • Small steps
Watch for
  • Forcing large plans before trust exists
Possibilities
  • Building credibility through modest actions

Line 6Six at the top 上六

Line text

乘馬班如,泣血漣如。

The horses of the team pull apart; tears of blood stream down.

Exhausted by the struggle, one is tempted to give up in despair. The line describes the low point of difficult beginnings and asks whether despair is truly warranted, or whether a change of approach is needed.

Themes
  • Despair at the low point
  • Needing a new approach
Watch for
  • Staying stuck in hopelessness
Possibilities
  • Letting a failed approach go and starting afresh
