Hexagram 16

EnthusiasmYù 豫

Also translated as Delight, Readiness, Contentment.

Thunder above Earth below

Thunder breaks out of the earth in spring, and everything stirs. Yu is the energy of shared enthusiasm, the excitement that gets people moving together, as music does. Used well, it mobilizes support for a worthy aim. Its shadow is complacency and self-indulgence: enthusiasm needs grounding in a real purpose and awareness of where it leads.

Commentary

Thunder (movement) rises from earth (devotion). Yu describes the delight that comes when movement meets willing response, like a melody that sets everyone in step. The judgment links this to mobilizing helpers: people follow gladly when the energy feels right. The reading may suggest a moment to inspire others and to act on a wave of goodwill.

The image connects enthusiasm to music and reverence: celebration that unites people and honors what is worthy. The lines are full of warnings, though: boasting, daydreaming, chronic dependency and losing yourself in pleasure. In relation to a question, Yu may emphasize channeling excitement into concrete plans and staying grounded.
